Pesky Roots / Raíces fastidiosas

At twelve, Izzy Rivera-Colón knows who she is. Not Ignacia, just Izzy. Like Elizabeth, the queen. In her Puerto Rican family, where all her cousins share the same names, she’s always been different. She’s rubia: her blonde, straight hair makes her special.

But when Izzy moves from New York City to New Jersey, things get weird. At her new school, there are not one but five blonde Elizabeths in her class. Her hair doesn’t set her apart anymore. Apparently, being “Latina” does—and what exactly is that?

Just as Izzy starts to find her footing, puberty hits. Curls and pesky brown roots throw her life into chaos. Everything that made her feel like herself is disappearing… So who even is she?

With help from her friends—Paddy, an animal-obsessed fact machine, and Laser, who’s more interested in snacks than people—Izzy will have to navigate a sea of Elizabeths to find herself.

A los doce años, Izzy Rivera-Colón sabe bien quién es. No Ignacia, sino Izzy. Igual que Elizabeth, la reina. En su familia puertorriqueña, donde primos y primas comparten los mismos nombres, ella siempre ha sido distinta. Su cabello lacio y rubio la hace sentir especial.

Pero cuando se muda de Nueva York a Nueva Jersey, las cosas empiezan a ponerse raras. En su nueva escuela, en su salón, no sólo hay una, sino cinco Elizabeths rubias. Su cabello ya no es tan único. Al parecer, lo único distintivo en ella, ahora, es ser “latina” (¿eso qué significa?).

Y justo cuando comienza a recomponerse, le llega la pubertad. Rizos y fastidiosas raíces castañas le desordenan la vida, volviéndola un caos. Si todo lo que le daba identidad se desvanece… ¿entonces quién es?

Con la ayuda de sus dos amigos: Paddy, obsesionado con los animales, y Laser, a quien le interesan más los bocadillos que la gente, Izzy deberá navegar un océano de Elizabeths para hallarse a sí misma.
