Sara the Great / Sara la grande

Every day Sara practices “Cucurrucucú paloma” and dreams of being a great singer like her idol, Lola Beltrán. But there’s one problem: she can’t carry a tune!

When she and her grandmother see a flyer for a singing contest, her abuela encourages her to enter the competition. But when Sara practices, her brother covers his ears and complains, “Stop that racket! I’m trying to study.” She sounds like a cat screeching!

One day at school, Sara hears the choir practicing and has an idea. Maybe the choir teacher will help her. He agrees and soon she is learning voice exercises, how to breathe and relax. She sings scales, “do re mi fa sol la …” and practices on the way to and from school, in the shower and even in the kitchen. On the day of the contest, she gives her best performance—and though she doesn’t win, she is thrilled to be recognized with third place!
