Manos a la obra: A Hands-on Latino DH Workshop

Virtual summer workshop

May 28-30, 2024
10:00am-2:00pm CT

Level: Beginner and intermediate

This workshop explores analog and digital methodologies to create scholarship and knowledge around the experiences of US Latinas/os. Participants will learn about US Latino digital humanities methods and theory, archiving, metadata creation and free, easy-to-use digital platforms (Omeka, TimelineJS and StoryMapJS). The workshop will provide an introduction to US Latino Digital Humanities, archives and related theories.

This workshop addresses the following topics:

  • How to identify materials for future projects (research, copyright issues, etc.)
  • How to create metadata
  • How to create meaningful and respectful data following ethics of care and reparative description
  • How to nourish communities of practice
  • How to conceptualize and develop the scope for your project
  • And other topics

No prior technical knowledge is required in this course. Anyone with an interest in US Latina/o studies and digital studies is welcome.

This course is based on the work of the Recovering the US Hispanic Literary Heritage program located at the University of Houston, one of the premier research programs for US Latino scholarship with a trajectory of 35+ years of locating, preserving and making available the written legacy of Latinas/os/es in the US from colonial times until 1980. The US Latino Digital Humanities (USLDH) Center provides a physical space for the development, support and training in digital humanities projects using Recovery’s vast collection of newspapers, photographs and digital materials; creates opportunities and facilities for digital publication of Latino-based projects and scholarship; promotes and fosters interdisciplinary scholarly work; and provides a communal virtual space to share knowledge and projects related to Latino digital humanities.
