Meet our 2024 Summer Interns

Arte Público Press, Recovering the US Hispanic Literary Heritage (Recovery) and US Latino Digital Humanities Center (USLDH) welcomed 14 summer interns this year from the University of Houston (UH), Rice University, Harvard Divinity School, University of St. Thomas and Houston Community College. These interns joined 6 UH Graduate Research Assistants to work on and learn a variety of tasks and skills, such as:

  • Scanning of archival items

  • Handling and preserving archival texts

2024 internships were supported by The Mellon Foundation, LULAC Council 60, the SER Jobs-Bank of America Summer Youth Internship Program, the Office of Ministry Studies (OMS) Field Education Program at Harvard Divinity School, Rice University’s Leadership Rice Mentorship Experience (LRME), Mellon Mays Fellow at Rice University and UH’s Summer Internship in Public History and Digital Humanities (SIPHDH).

Meet our 2024 Summer Interns

Marisol Andrade Muñoz (she/they) earned her BS in Graphic Design and Minor in Spanish from Arizona State University and is currently a MTS candidate in Mesoamerican Religious History at Harvard Divinity School. They are collaborating with Recovering the US Hispanic Literary Heritage (Recovery) to handle, digitize, preserve, and platform archival documents in the Backal Collection of sixteenth- through twentieth-century documents related to colonial-era Mexican religions. A multimedia designer with the sensibilities of a public historian, she is interested in leveraging the Digital Humanities to render legible histories of Mesoamerican personhood through time and space.

Erick García is a 2024 USLDH-LULAC 60 undergraduate intern. He is a junior double majoring in Political Science and Public Policy with a minor in Spanish for the Global Professions. Born to Mexican immigrants, he has been instilled with a deep sense of pride in his roots. This summer he joined the US Latino Digital Humanities Center where he explored just that. He hopes to embody his newfound knowledge from the archives with the aim of leaving a positive mark on his community.

Mariella Gonzalez Molina is a Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellow studying History and Art History at Rice University. She is interested in continuing her education by pursuing graduate school with her interests focusing on museum history and American heritage.

Yadira Hermosillo is a 2024 University of Houston Summer Internship in Public History and Digital Humanities (SIPHDH) intern. She is an undergraduate student majoring in Sociology and minoring in Women’s Studies at the University of Houston. Yadira hopes to continue her education by pursuing graduate school and studying higher education policy.

Yacaranday Herrera is a 2024 USLDH-Mellon intern. She is an undergraduate student majoring in Anthropology at the University of Houston. Yacaranday hopes to continue her education by pursuing graduate school after earning her bachelor’s degree.  She aims to focus on feminist praxis and advocacy as she continues to develop as an anthropologist.

Jacqueline Jaime is a 2024 SERJobs Bank of America Summer intern at the University of Houston’s Arte Publico Press/Recovery the US Hispanic Literary Heritage. She is an undergraduate student at the University of St. Thomas majoring in Pre-Nursing. During her career Jacqueline aspires to bring Latinx representation into the medical field. Through her internship she hopes to grow her professional skills and learn more about Latinx history.

Monica Jimenez is a 2024 intern for Summer Internship in Public History and Digital Humanities. She is an undergraduate student majoring in Anthropology and a double minor in Medicine and Society and Sociology at the University of Houston. She is currently working as a volunteer at Community Family Centers, a non-profit organization that offers community-based social and educational services to low-income families in Houston's East End. Monica hopes to use her knowledge and skills in diverse work settings to become a Community Liaison to build social mobility for underserved populations and connect people to opportunities.

Tiffany Lopez is a SER-Bank of America 2024 Summer Intern. She just graduated high school and will continue her education at Houston Community College and major in finance.

Bella Podmore is a junior at UH studying communications and marketing. She has worked with Arte Público Press since she started at UH in September 2022. After graduation she’d like to continue working in the publishing industry but is open to all options!

Madisyn Saenz is a 2024 Leadership Rice Mentor Experience (LRME) Intern. She is an undergraduate student majoring in Anthropology and minoring in Latinx studies at Rice University, and hopes to continue her education by pursuing graduate school after earning her bachelor’s degree in the Spring of 2025. Her long-term goal is to make Latin American communities the center of her anthropological research and amplify Latinx voices within academia.

Natalia Siboldi is a 2024 University of Houston Summer Internship in Public History and Digital Humanities (SIPHDH) intern. She is an undergraduate student majoring in History and minoring in Spanish at the University of Houston. Natalia plans to continue her education after graduating in Spring 2027 by going to law school.

Izabella Sifuentes is a 2024 Arte Público Press summer intern. They are a graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where they studied Creative Writing. They hope to continue sharing their love for art and storytelling.

Angy Torres is a 2024 USLDH-LULAC 60 undergraduate intern. She is majoring in Strategic Communications with a minor in Philosophy at the University of Houston. Currently in her final year, she plans to continue her education or pursue professional opportunities upon graduation.

Juletsi Zuniga-Juarez is  USLDH-Mellon intern at the University of Houston, majoring in Spanish and Education and minoring in Law, Values and Policy. Following her graduation in the fall of 2024, she plans to go to graduate school to obtain her master's degree in special education with the goal of attending Law School to help reform and serve the Education system for Latinos.
