The Fabulous Sinkhole and Other Stories
Jesús Salvador Treviño
Publication Date: April 1, 1995
The Fabulous Sinkhole and Other Stories is a first collection of short stories by noted film director and writer, Jesús Salvador Treviño. Treviño’s decision to write a collection of short stories arose from his frustration over years Hollywood rejecting his film projects with Hispanic characters and themes. Rather than give up, he channeled his energy into these short stories.
Through his interconnected stories, Treviño gives us an off-beat, magically real and at times raucous vision of life in the barrios of Arroyo Grande, Texas. Ever the observer of the tragicomic human scene, Treviño recreates for the reader the world of adults as overheard and filtered through the understanding of the young. Each adult action creates a wave of repercussions for the children, be it love triangles, petty jealousies or revenge. The rich texture of the narrative and the rich diversity of Hispanic characters all come to a romping, feverish end with a fantasy that features an army of movie stereotypes of Hispanics who have returned as zombies bent on avenging themselves on Hollywood directors and screenwriters.
“Treviño links all the stories back to the events of the title story. There’s more to this sinkhole than meets the eye.”
JESÚS SALVADOR TREVIÑO is an award-winning filmmaker, renowned for his pioneering documentaries and feature films of the Chicano experience. Treviño has been able to continue his commitment to Hispanic civil rights by serving as the executive producer of such important documentary projects as the acclaimed four-part PBS series Chicano! The History of the Mexican American Civil Rights Movement while producing and/or directing such Hollywood television dramas as Resurrection Boulevard, NYPD Blue, Sea Quest, and many others. He is the author of a collection of stories, The Fabulous Sinkhole and Other Stories (Arte Público Press, 1995), its sequel The Skyscraper that Flew (Arte Público Press, 2005) and a memoir, Eyewitness: A Filmmaker’s Memoir of the Chicano Movement (Arte Público Press, 2001).
