Meet our 2025 Summer Interns

Arte Público Press, Recovering the US Hispanic Literary Heritage (Recovery) and US Latino Digital Humanities Center (USLDH) welcomed 14 summer interns this year from the University of Houston (UH), Rice University, Harvard Divinity School, University of St. Thomas and Houston Community College. These interns joined 6 UH Graduate Research Assistants to work on and learn a variety of tasks and skills, such as:

  • Scanning of archival items
  • Microfilm scanning
  • Handling and preserving archival texts
  • Inventory of primary documents
  • Organizing collections
  • Creating finding aids
  • Curating exhibits
  • Database research
  • Primary document research
  • Asset management 
  • Data management (with spreadsheets)
  • Metadata creation
  • Metadata translation
  • Familiarity with Library of Congress Subject Headings
  • E-book editing and translation
  • Digital archives (Omeka)
  • Digital tools (mapping, timelines, digital collections, OpenRefine)
  • Archival theory
  • Digital humanities theory

2024 internships were supported by The Mellon Foundation, LULAC Council 60, the SER Jobs-Bank of America Summer Youth Internship Program, the Office of Ministry Studies (OMS) Field Education Program at Harvard Divinity School, Rice University’s Leadership Rice Mentorship Experience (LRME), Mellon Mays Fellow at Rice University and UH’s Summer Internship in Public History and Digital Humanities (SIPHDH).

Meet our 2024 Summer Interns

Siani Alanis is a 2025 summer intern. She is a native Houstonian currently attending the University of Houston pursuing a major in History and a minor in anthropology. She plans to pursue a master's degree in public history and eventually work as a museum curator.

Fernanda De Jesus Avalos Gudiño is a 2025 Alexandra L. Rowan Memorial Foundation intern. She is a senior at University of Houston, majoring in English and minoring in Political Science. She enjoys reading all kinds of fiction from Sci-Fi Fantasy to Japanese manga. After graduating, Fernanda plans to pursue a career in the publications industry to help stories reach wider audiences.

Jenna Brown is a 2025 Leadership Rice Mentorship Experience (LRME) intern. She is an undergraduate student at Rice University, where she is pursuing majors in Spanish and Linguistics, with plans to attend law school and pursue a career as an attorney. Her interests include language, sociolinguistics, community engagement, law, the humanities, and business. Her work at Arte Público Press has deepened her understanding of these areas, shaping the perspective and skill set she hopes to bring into the legal world.

Jesus Garcia is an intern at Arte Público Press and a student at Carnegie Vanguard High School. Through this internship, he hopes to gain valuable work experience and deepen his understanding of Hispanic culture and history.

Mariana Sofia Martinez is a 2025 Bank of America Summer Youth Program participant. As an incoming freshman at Houston Community College she plans to continue her education with the goal of attending law school and become a Latina lawyer who empowers Hispanic and Mexican communities to stand up for their rights and pursue justice.

Yamaris Pacheco is a 2025 Marketing Intern and undergraduate student at University of Houston, pursuing a major in English Literature with a minor in Journalism. She plans to pursue a master's degree in digital marketing, with aspirations of building a career that combines creativity, strategy, and storytelling. Her interest include fiction writing, reading, and learning new skills. Born and raised in Puerto Rico, she takes pride in her Hispanic heritage and is passionate about leaning the best ways to promote Hispanic literature and culture through her work at Arte Público Press.

Teodoro Perez-Kinney is a high school student at Carnegie Vanguard Highschool. He is a rising junior and a 2025 intern at Arte Público Press/Recovering the US Hispanic Literary Heritage. He hopes to use the skills gathered during this internship for future careers while going into the engineering field.

Armando Ramirez is a 2025 Bank of America Summer intern at the University of Houston's Arte Público Press. He is an undergraduate student studying Computer Science at the University of Houston. He wishes to continue exploring different internships and pursuing his career once he finishes his bachelor's degree.

Isaac Robles is a US Hispanic Literary Heritage Recovery volunteer. He graduated as an undergraduate in Spring of 2024 from the University of Houston with a double major in English and Psychology. Isaac hopes to gain experience and skills on the back end of research in order to improve his own works and pursue further education.

Julia Ines Ventura is a rising junior at Carnegie Vanguard High School. She is a 2025 summer intern at Arte Publico Press-Recovering the US Hispanic Literary Heritage. She hopes to use these skills continuing her high school education and carrying them into college, and into a future career as a Lawyer.
